Schist is a metamorphic rock with flat sheet-like grains. It contains elongated minerals arranged in roughly parallel layers. These minerals usually easily split off into flakes or slabs.

Schist is classified as a metamorphic rock, which means it is formed under extreme heat and pressure, even though it usually originates from sedimentary rocks. It results from compression related to tectonic movement, or under the weight of sediment layers. During the accumulation of sediments, the first sediment layers are deeply buried, placing them under pressure. They are compacted and cemented together, giving them a flaky aspect.

It is sometimes difficult to distinguish sedimentary schist from metamorphic schist. The most common variety of schist is slate, which is used as a roof covering material.
